Root Canal Treatment - What is Endodontics?

In all healthy or infected, degenerated teeth, there are rooms in the form of a closed basin, which we call the pulp chamber, where the blood and nerve package that feeds our teeth is located. Root canal treatment has become inevitable if unbearable hot and cold sensitivity or pain in the teeth occur due to tooth decay, trauma and similar reasons.

With root canal treatment, the pulp chambers of the teeth that are infected for some reason and the tissues in the form of small tubules inside the tooth roots are cleaned. As a result, root canal treatment is performed. To put it in a simpler language, the operation performed on the visible part of our tooth is the filling process, and the operation performed on the root part of our tooth that can be seen with an invisible x-ray is the root canal treatment.

Is There an Alternative to Root Canal Treatment?

When all dentists come to us with a tooth that can be indicated for root canal treatment, we show it very well to keep the existing tooth in the mouth as much as possible. We recommend root canal treatment to our patients, unless our physicians declare otherwise.

In some cases, individuals may not want to have root canal treatment. In such a case, unfortunately, in order to get rid of the pain, first of all, drug treatment is started and then tooth extraction takes place.

In short, root canal treatment for a sore tooth is the last way to keep the tooth in the mouth. Having a bridge or implant instead of the extracted tooth is more costly than root canal treatment.

How make is root treatment?

Root canal treatment begins with local anesthesia to the tooth to be treated. After providing full numbness in the relevant area, the caries is cleaned in the first place and the pulp chamber of the tooth is reached. Tooth roots have canal openings and the length of the canals is determined with special instruments and the expansion process is performed.

Disinfection of the canals is very important during the canal expansion process. The reason for this is the cleaning of microbes attached to the tooth root canal walls. There are special solutions and equipment developed for this process. After the disinfection and expansion process in the canal is completed, the root canal is filled and the upper aesthetic filling is made and the patient's use is ensured.

Root canal treatment is completed in an average of 45 minutes to one and a half hours, depending on the condition and region of the tooth. Depending on the condition of the root canal treatment and aesthetic filling tooth, a single session can be performed, or the treatments can be extended up to three sessions.

What Should Be Considered After Root Canal Treatment?

  • After root canal treatment, patients may feel pain in their jaw joints as their mouths remain open for an average of one hour. This situation is temporary.

  • Even if there is no harm in consuming food before the effect of anesthesia wears off, patients may bite their lips or tongue as they will be lethargic. For this reason, it will be better for them to eat after the numbness has passed.

  • It is normal for 7-14 days to step on the related tooth after the treatment. However, this situation decreases day by day and disappears at the end of the relevant period.

  • After the root canal treatment, the hot and cold sensitivities of the patients disappear completely, but as we mentioned in the previous article, they may have difficulty in stepping on it in the first days. For this reason, very hard and granular foods should not be consumed with the relevant area, preferably more easily chewable foods should be consumed.

In Which Situations Is Root Canal Treatment Applied?

There may be many situations that require root canal treatment. Root canal treatment indication for a tooth is placed in the following cases.

  • In individuals experiencing severe hot-cold sensitivity,

  • Due to the pain in the teeth out of nowhere and lasting longer than 10 minutes,

  • In cases where there is deep dentin caries that can also be seen with x-ray on the tooth surface,

  • If the teeth are rotten and painful under the previous fillings,

  • When pains that wake you up at night are present,

  • If the tooth feels as if it has risen in the mouth and there is a complaint of not being able to step on it,

  • In cases with advanced bone resorption and gingival infections,

  • If there is swelling in the gingival area, which is not very reflected in the face area,

  • If there is advanced bone destruction and excessive loosening of the teeth, root canal treatment is not applied to the related tooth or teeth.

  • When a dental examination is provided with x-ray, root canal treatment does not yield successful results if there is very large root bone resorption  and abscess.

  • When there is excessive material loss in the visible part of the tooth, even if root canal treatment is performed, the tooth will not be able to participate in the chewing function, so performing root canal treatment will not increase the comfort for the patient. For this reason, root canal treatment is not recommended.

  • If there are vertical or horizontal fractures in the teeth, even if root canal treatment can be performed, it should be followed very well.

  • If there is swelling up to the face, root canal treatment can be tried, but the rate of response to definitive treatment is low.

  • How Many Sessions Does Laminated Teeth Veneer Process Take?
The production of porcelain leaf teeth is completed with 2-3 sessions and a total period of 5-7 days after all oral care of the patients. In the first session, preparations are made, the teeth are made suitable for impression taking, and if necessary, temporary teeth are made after the impression taking process. At the second appointment, the compatibility of the gums and teeth is checked. In the next session or sessions, it is presented to the patient's taste and if our patients are satisfied with the procedure, the laminated teeth are permanently attached with special adhesives.
  • Does Laminate Tooth Veneer Fall Off After Adhering?
There are special resin-based adhesives produced specifically for porcelain laminated teeth, and since the porcelain laminates are bonded with these special adhesives, it is not very common for porcelain laminates to decimate. However, if the dentist did not comply with the bonding procedure, if saliva or water came to the tooth surface during bonding, then the adhesive does not provide a complete adhesion to the tooth surface. In this case, it causes the laminate to come off early. Again, a factor originating from the physician is the incomplete compatibility of the tooth and the laminate. If there is such a situation, the right thing should be to put the work done by the physician to the top and produce the laminated teeth again. However, if this is not treated properly, unfortunately, laminates may fall in the early period. In patients who do not provide good oral hygiene or consume acidic foods, or when foods that should not be consumed are consumed, there may be fractures or falls in the laminates. Individuals who grind their teeth should be treated with a dental plaque and botox.
  • What is the Difference Between Zircon Dental Veneer and Laminated Veneer?
The biggest difference between zirconia veneer and porcelain laminated leaf veneer is the amount of tooth hard tissue reduction applied to the tooth. In zirconia crowns, 0.9-2 mm of tooth hard tissue is removed from all surfaces of the tooth, while in porcelain laminated teeth, this ratio is possible with a maximum of 0.3-0.6 mm of hard tissue reduction from one surface of the tooth.
